Kiva Microloans

Kiva

The Learning Center is a Kiva U.S. Trustee. In essence, this means that we will facilitate CRAFT farmers in accessing 0% interest microloans!

What is Kiva?

Kiva is a non-profit that enables socially impactful entrepreneurs to access 0% interest business loans. These loans are crowd-funded by 1.5 million lenders from around the world that lend as little as $25 each and rally around an entrepreneur as potential customers, business advisers, and brand ambassadors. As a Trustee we have the ability to recommend small farm businesses to the Kiva program.

Loan Details

Kiva loans are small, as much as $10,000 with up to three-year repayment periods. These loans are crowd-funded on the Kiva website with a 0% interest rate and administered via PayPal. Borrowers are tasked with active online self-promotion and fundraising. Farms can use a Kiva loan for any business purpose, including but not limited to: purchasing inventory, investing in equipment, expanding production, hiring staff, marketing, and advertising.

AOLC as Trustee

Angelic Organics Learning Center is a trustee with Kiva! As a trustee we are able to endorse up to ten borrowers with potential to endorse more in the future. This means that we are responsible for finding farm businesses that could benefit from a Kiva loan, publicly endorsing these entrepreneurs on the Kiva website, and providing ongoing support throughout the loan term. For this process, we will be vetting internally in CRAFT to find borrowers to connect to the 1.5 million lenders in the Kiva community.

Borrower Requirements

  • Must be a current member of Upper Midwest CRAFT or an SFB graduate
  • Must be able to demonstrate ability to repay (we will request certain financial information from you)
  • Must be at least 18 years of age
  • Must have a PayPal account (or the ability to create one)
  • Not currently in bankruptcy or foreclosure

Once you are approved for our endorsement, you’ll receive a link to create your public profile. When your loan application is approved by Kiva, you will enter a private fundraising period and then work to fully fund your loan via a public online profile.
