Roots and Wings Job Readiness Training
Youth and adults who are part of our Youth Leader or Apprentice program all receive job readiness training. Some will continue with employment related to food and farming, but all will benefit from the exposure to a first job experience.
All youth leaders work on five core behaviors:
Youth in our production track focus on the basics of urban agriculture, ranging from soil preparation to planting, watering, weeding and harvest. They learn about the thirty different crops that we grow on our farm site, and spend up to 20 hours per week in hands-on training.
Youth in our enterprise track learn basic customer service, communication, product knowledge and presentation, sales training, and cash management. They coordinate the harvest, sales and delivery of vegetables from the farm through diverse venues, including a community supported agriculture farm, farm stand, and our unique “We Pick Wednesdays.”
Youth in our education track help lead food and farm-based learning activities for children, peers and adults at Blackhawk Courts. They practice facilitation skills, lead games for younger children, and do cooking classes with food fresh from the urban farm.
