Celebrating Good Food Advocates

The work of growing food for others offers many challenges, but rarely garnishes much in the way of recognition and acknowledgement. However, the work of two women farmers was celebrated at the recent Good Food Advocate Celebration on April 28, 2017. Andrea Hazzard, farmer and proprieter of Hazzard Free Farm and Ketura St. Fleurose, Roots & Wings Youth Leader, environmental activist, and high school student, were honored as the 2017 Good Food Advocates by Angelic Organics Learning Center. The award recognized the two women for their work in supporting the mission of Angelic Organics Learning Center to build sustainable local food & farm systems.

The second annual Good Food Advocate Celebration was held at the beautiful Prairie Street Brewhouse overlooking the Rock River. Over 110 guests enjoyed beer tasting, locally-sourced food from Hazzard Free Farm, Blackhawk Courts Farm & Garden, among other farms, live music by Mr. Ed, baby goats, live painting by Victor Schoonover, and prizes featuring shares of local vegetables from Sugar Stone Farm and Blackhawk Courts Farm & Garden. The event was a smashing success! We exceeded our fundraising goal for the evening and raised over $20,000 to support the urban agriculture work of Roots & Wings at Blackhawk Courts Farm & Garden!

The success of this fundraiser was made possible by our amazing benefit chair and board member, Constance McCarthy, and a stellar supporting committee. We would also like to thank a generous anonymous donor who provided 12 tickets for members of the community to attend this event.
