First Field Day of the 2013 Season: Crossroads Community Farm

The 2013 Upper Midwest CRAFT Field Day Schedule got off to an early start this year, with our first on-farm event at Crossroads Community Farm in Cross Plains, Wisconsin. Owner and farmer Mike Noltnerwyss hosted 12 CRAFT members on January 29th for an informative and valuable afternoon of conversing about organic vegetable production.

John Hendrickson of Stone Circle Farm moderated the discussions, which focused on seven crops: onions, sweet peppers, cucumbers, melons, broccoli, tomatoes and ginger. For each crop the farmers chimed in about the experiences they’ve had and obstacles they’ve faced in regards to seed varieties, seeding/transplanting, pests and diseases, irrigation issues, harvest and postharvest challenges and pricing concerns. There was ample time for everyone in attendance to have their questions answered by the group, and the wealth of knowledge possessed by the farmers meant that everyone left having learned something that he/she could take back and use on their farm.

The idea for this type of Field Day surfaced out of the Fall 2012 Upper Midwest CRAFT Steering Committee meeting. Given the success of the event, it is a Field Day worth repeating in 2014. For CRAFT members that would like to have an active role in designing Field Days offered by CRAFT, please email the Angelic Organics Learning Center Farmer Training Program Assistant, to find out how you can get involved.
