Kiva Zip micro-financing platform helps local farm businesses

Angelic Organics Learning Center became a trustee on Kiva Zip in 2015. Kiva Zip is an online platform that helps small businesses acquire 0% interest loans from a pool of donors across the country. These businesses often make a positive impact in their communities as a result of the loan. We’d love to share the follow-up story of Three Sisters Community Farm. We are also currently looking for more farm businesses to endorse on Kiva Zip in 2016.

Farmers Kelly Kiefer and Jeff Schreiber met while working at Wellspring, a Milwaukee-area farm-based educational organization. They started Three Sisters Community Farm in 2011 on Kelly's family land in Campbellsport, Wisconsin. The majority of their production is produce, but in 2014, they started a high-quality compost production. They discovered that making good farm-scale compost can be tough without the right equipment. Our Farm Asset Builder program and a loan from Kiva Zip helped them purchase a skid loader to better achieve their desired results.

Jeff and Kelly were endorsed by Angelic Organics Learning Center, and on March 2, 2015, they launched their fundraising page on Kiva Zip. Within 10 hours, 12 lenders from across the country fulfilled their loan - a record on Kiva Zip!

Jeff posted this update below on Kiva Zip at the end of 2015. Thank you Jeff and Kelly for being such awesome borrowers!

Here, at the end of a successful and productive 2015, Kelly and I just wanted to say how grateful we are for all the support we received for this project. It has had a very real, positive and concrete impact on our growing farm business.

Though there were a few hiccups (it took us longer to find a skidloader than we anticipated, and longer to gather all the materials we needed), we did finally succeed in turning your support into a very large amount of amazing compost. We’ll let it mellow this winter and then get in on the field in the spring of 2016. If past experience is any indication, this input should translate into less pest and disease pressure, more resilient and fertile soil, and greater overall abundance as we move forward. And, of course, we’ll be positioned to continue making farm-scale compost in years to come. Hooray!

Working with Kiva and with AOLC has been a breeze, and we hope it has been for you too. What a great resource and platform! What a great way to give growing businesses a boost where they need it most!

Thank you all again for your support, and blessings in the New Year!
