Eat healthy, support Rockford youth by joining Roots & Wings CSA!

The Roots & Wings Network of Angelic Organics Learning Center is pleased to join other farms from around the country for National CSA Sign-Up Day on Friday, February 26th. The day encourages food consumers to buy a share of their local farm’s harvest for the 2016 season, a buying model known as Community Supported Agriculture, or CSA.

Angelic Organics Learning Center and the Upper Midwest CRAFT farmer alliance launched the Beginning Farmer of the Year in 2013 in order to celebrate and promote new sustainable farmers. The winner of this award then honors an experienced farmer (the Mentor Farmer of the Year) who generously mentored them. These awards are now sponsored by Routes to Farm and the farmer alliances of the greater Chicago foodshed. Winners get cash, recognition at Good Food Festival, and more! Nominations are due by January 31st!

Unfortunately, bird flu is in the news again..and it's a serious concern for all poultry owners in the Mississippi Flyway, which includes Illinois. A strain of highly-pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI), variant H5N2, has been discovered in numerous Midwestern states within the past month or so. This virus has not been transmitted to people or entered the food supply, but literally millions of chickens and turkeys have already died or been euthanized due to this disease. Locally grown produce and agriculture has seen a recent surge in popularity. Consumers enjoy a fresh, sustainable, and often organic product that supports their local communities. This demand for local food has encouraged more young people to take up farming as a career. One of these farmers, Jessica Rinks of Purple Leaf Farms, will be recognized with the 3rd annual Beginning Farmer of the Year Award at the opening symposium of the Good Food Festival & Conference on Friday, March 20, 10:15 AM at Chicago’s UIC Forum.
