Rockford Fall Harvest Celebration

Come celebrate with the Learning Center and the South West Rockford Community Garden Cooperative Partnership as we celebrate a successful and very fruitful first growing season!

On Friday, October 29, from 11:00am-2:30pm at Tinker Swiss Cottage Museum & Gardens, 411 Kent St in Rockford, we will be celebrating the harvest season and expressing our appreciation for all of our 2010 volunteers.

In its first year, the South West Rockford Community Gardens Partnership has already made a big impact in South West Rockford and beyond. Over 100 youth from the community have put in over 500 hours of community service in the gardens. Over 100 pounds of food has been passed on in the community. Produce grown by participants in Eco-Advocates and Youth Build has been sold at 3 farmer's markets throughout the Northwest Illinois to raise money for the project.

We will be celebrating all of this hard work in a fun way with a Chili “Cook-Off”, a pumpkin carving event, music, fall refreshments, and more.

The South West Rockford Community Gardens Partnership consists of organizations and programs all located within walking distance of each other. Comprehensive Community Solutions, Inc. & YouthBuild Rockford, Tinker Swiss Cottage Museum and Gardens, South West Ideas for Today and Tomorrow (SWIFTT), Eco Advocates, Angelic Organic Learning Center (AOLC), & Booker Washington Community Center have all come together to produce five community gardens all located a stone's throw apart.

The South West Rockford Community Gardens Partnership also received support from the Rockford Park District, the Neighborhood Network, the University of Illinois Extension, the Winnebago County Master Gardeners, Workforce Investment Act (WIA), and Heifer International.

The purpose of these gardens is to close the distance that stands between low-income populations and healthy, locally-grown food and to provide a vehicle for valuable service learning projects for youth throughout the community.
